*Study heroes from across time and cultures to discover similarities and differences between mythological, literary and real-life heroes, and distinguish the media's heroes from your own
*Read, write, and engage in various types of collaborative discussions to explore universal questions and concepts
*Move from discussion and exposition into debate and effective argumentation as you research and develop a claim about a contemporary issue
*Present the voices of fictional or actual people who have fought social injustice(s) by helping, hoping or persevering
*Apply the lessons of the past to start making a difference today by raising awareness an encouraging people to take action about significant issues such as indifference and/or intolerance
*Learn critical academic vocabulary and tier 2 words
*Review essential reading skills and independent learning strategies on a daily basis
*Learn more about the writing process via writing workshops and formal assignments
*Review strategies for writing narrative, expository and argumentative essays
